Darwin Group’s state-of-the-art COVID-19 facility named Construction Project of the Year

Darwin Group is proud to have won the Construction Project of the Year award as part of the Insider West Midlands Property Awards 2020.
Our emergency respiratory ward at New Cross Hospital was delivered for the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust back in July 2020 and the modular project – scaling 1744 sq m – beat off other Midlands-based challengers to be crowned Construction Project of the Year.
The two-storey facility provided an additional 56 beds split across a ground floor critical care unit and a first-floor high dependency unit for New Cross Hospital during the height of the pandemic. The modular building is primarily being used as a COVID-19 ward but will become a space to treat bariatric and cystic fibrosis patients in the future.
The winning project was one of three critical care facilities proudly delivered by Darwin Group for the NHS in the last year in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Our use of highly efficient off-site construction methods have provided the ideal solution for the delivery of urgent healthcare wards, all equipped with hospital beds for thousands of intensive care patients across the UK.
The emergency Nightingale Ward was designed, manufactured and built in less than six weeks and delivered during lockdown.
Our team’s commitment and dedication to adapt and strengthen already comprehensive site working practices to observe social distancing measures, successfully enabled the delivery of these much-needed facilities.
Stew Watson, Head of Estates Development at Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust said: “We were delighted with the new ward that Darwin Group provided at New Cross Hospital. The new facilities were constructed to very high standards and the experience we had working with the team was excellent. This was a challenging project, but we do not feel that the fast-track programme we have had to deliver against has in any way compromised the high standards that we as the client set Darwin Group for this scheme.”
Charles Pierce, Managing Director at Darwin Group, added: “We are honoured to have received the award for Construction Project of the Year. Some outstanding projects were shortlisted and we have beaten off some fierce competition for this award – including firms using more traditional construction methods. As a modular builder and a West Midlands based company, the ward we delivered for New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton was a project that was very close to our hearts. It is therefore fantastic to have been recognised regionally as the winning project. I’d like to thank our clients at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust and give a special mention to the healthcare staff at New Cross Hospital, whose tireless hard work has helped so many during these unprecedented times.”
